Guide to Dharamshala, India

Dharamshala is another of my favorite hill stations in India! Known as ‘Little Tibet’, it is currently home to the Dalai Lama as well as the Tibetan government-in-exile. Dharamshala has gorgeous views of the Himalayas as well as a culture unlike anything else I saw in India! When most people visit Dharamshala, they are actually looking to go to Upper Dharamshala (Mcleod Ganj) which is very different from Lower Dharamshala. Read on to see everything you need to know about this bucket list destination in India!

There are many buses to Dharamshala from various cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla, and Amritsar. The one downside is that there are no sleeper buses in Himachal Pradesh. How to Get from Dharamshala to Mcleod Ganj

Keep in mind that the buses will take you to Lower Dharamshala, then you will have to make your own way from Lower Dharamshala up to Mcleod Ganj! There are several ways to do that.

Dharamshala Skyway from Lower Dharamshala to Mcleod Ganj

The Dharamshala Skyway was opened in January 2022. It is considered the fastest way to get from Lower Dharamshala to Mcleod Ganj. The ride takes about 5 minutes to travel the 1.8 km ropeway.

A one way ticket on the Dharamshala Skyway costs 480 rupees ($5.60 USD) while a round trip ticket is 700 rupees ($8.20 USD). This makes it the most expensive option, especially if you are more than one person, however it does have outstanding views of the mountains!

Taxi from Lower Dharamshala to Mcleod Ganj

There are tons of taxis in Lower Dharamshala that are used to making the 20-30 minute trip up to Mcleod Ganj and back. When I visited I paid 300 rupees ($3.53 USD) for a taxi from close to the Dharamshala bus station up to the main square of Mcleod Ganj. That was the first taxi price I was offered as a foreign solo female traveler. It was already cheaper than the Skyway so I didn’t try to get it any lower, I just jumped in.

If you are arriving in Dharamshala late at night, it might be best to have your hotel book you a taxi ahead of time. I arrived in the Dharamshala bus station after 9pm as my bus from Shimla was delayed due to snow and there was only one taxi at the Dharamshala bus station!

Bus from Lower Dharamshala to Mcleod Ganj

There are smaller local buses that run from Lower Dharamshala to Mcleod Ganj for 30 rupees ($0.35 USD). This is the cheapest option, however it doesn’t run as frequently. It also takes longer to travel by bus – up to 45 minutes.

Walk between Lower Dharamshala and Mcleod Ganj

Yes, it is possible to walk between Dharamshala and Mcleod Ganj! I did it myself! However, it is definitely easier to walk down from Mcleod Ganj to Dharamshala than it is to go up. The walk from Dharamshala to Mcleod Ganj is all uphill so it is much harder (though not impossible).

I started my walk down from Mcleod Ganj to Dharamshala along the Kora Circuit below the Dalai Lama temple. I had to ask multiple people along the path for directions to the path to Lower Dharamshala. However, once I saw other people hiking through the woods it was easy to follow the correct path. It was a shortcut down to the main road. Then I was able to follow the main road the whole way down to my hotel in Lower Dharamshala.
